Conceptualization

Definition

A conceptualization is an abstract, simplified view of the world that we wish to represent for some purpose. In Gruber’s formalization, a conceptualization C is defined as an intensional relational structure consisting of:

  • A domain D (a set of objects/entities)
  • A set of conceptual relations R on D

More formally, a conceptualization is characterized by the set of all its intended models - the possible states of affairs that are consistent with our conceptual understanding of the domain.

Relationship to Other Concepts

A conceptualization relates to ontology as follows:

  1. Conceptualization: The abstract understanding of a domain (intensional)
  2. Ontological Commitment: The logical constraints that approximate this understanding
  3. Ontology: A specific logical specification that commits to a conceptualization

The conceptualization is the “what we mean” while the ontology is “how we say it formally.”
